NEW YEARS EVE 2004
At 12-02 on New Years Day 2004, in a Bournemouth Nite Club, a Gentleman out with a group of friends, threw away an almost FULL packet of Rothmans Cigarettes, he then toasted in the New Year with his LAST GLASS of Bourbon and Cola and announced that he was giving it all up as he couldnt see his feet when he looked down, and that he would run the "
London Marathon" that year.
Everyone doubted that it would happen as he actually was jus short of
260 pounds in weight, (
18 stone) had been a regular drinker of bourbon, and smoked by his "Own Admission"
30 to 40 cigarettes a day.
Even greater doubts were voiced when it was realised that the
London Marathon that year was on the 18th April. only giving him
15 weeks and 2 days to get fit for it,
He managed to get a late place in the
London Marathon, R
unning to raise funds for a
Charity, and set about training. He didnt go to a special gym, just took advice and quietly trained on his own.
the First time was the hardest and he really wavered in resolve, he hadnt realised how unfit he had become, he didn't manage to run 100 yards that first night without almost collapsing. he got back in and formed his training plan. this took the form some real heart searching.
He started to re-invent himself, his lifestyle changed, He started to eat a well balanced diet which was combined with excercise in the morning before going to work and running training the evenings.
Well the outcome of it was that he did line up at the start of the London Marathon on that day in April 2004, it was the 18th, actually and it was the the first time it had rained for the FLORA LONDON MARATHON. and
5 hours and 57 minutes later he crossed the finish Line,
He had done it! All the training had paid off, and That Prized medal was round his neck, he had proved everyone wrong.
His weight was down to 200 pounds (14and a half stone) "probably less after the marathon" it had been hard, but he had finished. he was now one of the Elite Number that had run
"THE LONDON MARATHON"
He ran that Marathon and six other International Marathons that year all fto raise funds for Charities
Then in 2005 made it even harder for himself, he started to run dressed as a Red White and Blue Dragon, he has run a total to date of
38 International Marathons and Half Marathons, (plus many smaller runs) in the UK, Europe and the USA, and as a result has now become known as
"The Marathon Dragon"
